We were very fortunate to have the Aviation team from Pun U Association Wah Yan Primary School in Hong Kong facilitating three aviation workshops in Xavier Jesuit school last weekend. The workshop team included Dr. John Tan, the school principal; Mr Wu and their bright assistant student leaders, as well as two associates of the LAM Foundation, Dr. Sunny Lam and Ms.Cary Chan. The Aviation team gave three workshops, one for the XJS teachers and two more to allow grade 3 students and our secondary school grade 7 and 8 students to participate. This meant that every area of the school project got the opportunity to take part in the fantastic activities.
The content of the 3 workshops ranged from learning about the Particle Theory and the aerodynamics of paper planes and real planes, folding two basic paper plane models and pedagogical knowledge to organising paper plane competitions to test their models. The team adapted the content according to the ability of the individual group that they presented to.
All participants not only learnt something new but also had so much fun. The XJS record in the Paper Plane Range challenge was 22 metres achieved by Baromei, one of our Grade 7 students, while the record in the Time Aloft challenge was 4.3 seconds, accomplished by a skilful Grade 3 pupil.
The Xavier Jesuit school presented Certificates of Appreciation to each of the talented student leaders from the Aviation team in Pun U Association Wah Yan Primary School, to thank them for bringing their excellent workshop to our school.
We wish the Aviation team all the best in their future competitions.
Finally a big thank you to all the staff and facilitators who helped with translations from Khmer to English and those who were hands-on to help on the day!
