Before the Phchum Ben holiday, XJS conducted a second Visual Art Workshop from 17th to 20th September 2019. In this workshop, 31 teachers supported by JSC, were in attendance. These teachers came from Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Sisophon and Pursat.

As most of the participants were at different levels in the area of art, the focus in this workshop was on designing an art curriculum for primary school students. The principles of designing a scheme of work in Art for grades 3 and 4 was emphasized throughout the workshop. 13 topics were designed from the scheme of work and the teachers were asked to illustrate how they may be able to teach these topics in their own classroom. The participants gained more confident as they get to practice and discover their own methods in dealing with these topics during the workshop.

Some participants from the public schools were quite skeptical as to how to convince their colleagues to teach Art in their own classroom. However, despite this major challenge, we encouraged them to start with a small group of 4 to 5 students and to put the students’ artworks on the walls in their own classroom to motivate other classes. We hope this will motivate and encourage more and more student in Cambodia to the world of Art.
