Following the experience of the Summer School last September, we discovered 45 of the grade 6 children could not read or write. So, in early December, we arranged with the Principal of the local primary school to provide free extra classes at our Community Learning Centre in the afternoon to their students of grades 3-6 who have learning difficulties. The primary school of Phnom Bak was happy to cooperate in creating this program. To our surprise, 102 children enrolled for these classes. They had to fail a reading test first before they were admitted. Strangely, their motivation to learn is strong. Our Khmer teacher, Mr. Yom Yeat, runs an active participative program to help encourage fast progress. We hope that after three months of this program, their teachers in the local primary school will notice a huge improvement!
