On the 8th of September 2015, a group of Japanese volunteers working in Cambodia, gathered to share their musical talents with the 150 grade six primary school students attending the Xavier Jesuit School Project’s summer school in Sisophon. The five Japanese women first introduced the students to action songs and then demonstrated their various musical instruments, such as the piano, the oboe, the trombone and the melodica. One sang a beautiful opera song to the amazement of all present. Our two American volunteers also participated with funny American folk songs on the guitar and piano. Will is gifted on the piano while Tom is gifted on the guitar. Ms. Lucia Wong, our Teacher Trainer, joined in by playing the flute. Br. Tino, an Indonesian Jesuit scholastic in Battambang and Ms. Dawoon, a Korean volunteer with Jesuit Service Cambodia in Phnom Penh also sang some haunting lyrics for the students. Afterwards, many of the students shared their enjoyment of the music but said that they would like to sing like this also. Let’s see now if we can prepare a mini-student concert!
