It was an exciting experience for the 21 teachers of Xavier Jesuit School and those from selected schools around Sereisophon who joined a five-day workshop with the Astronomy Association Team from Korea. This workshop was launched to help science teachers of Banteay Meanchey and those interested in the scientific revolution to understand more about our celestial sphere and the new technology of our age in searching for lives in the outer space.
Various topics were included in the workshop that covered both lessons and practices. Some of the topics were familiarizing oneself with the telescope, assembling and using it, getting to know various bodies in our solar system and the universe, learning how to measure the length of those giant bodies from our planet and where they are positioned, how to identify various types of light in our space, and finally how to control a robot on Moon or Mars from our planet.
During the first few nights of the workshop, attempts to gaze closely at those bodies in the celestial sphere with the assembled telescopes were out of hands due to bad weather. Nevertheless, the last day was still filled with laughter and curiosity as the teachers attempted to control a robot doing research on Mars.
The workshop was filled with many new experiences and it is hoped that the teachers will be able to apply the learnings to find more creative ways to deliver scientific lessons to their students.
