On the 14th of June 2017, at 3 p.m., the Minister of Education, Youth and Sport, His Excellency Dr. Hang Chhuon Naron and the Secretary of State, His Excellency, Mr. Lao Chhiv Iv, welcomed Fr. Ashley and Ms. Sonai to the Ministry. Mr. Vorng Phirum, the Head of the Construction Department of the Ministry was also present. (He took the photos!). Fr. Ashley and Ms. Sonai explained that three years of the initial five year Project Agreement signed on the 12th of June 2014 had passed. Three of the four components are now functioning well; the Community Learning Centre, the Primary School and the Secondary School. The fourth component, the Teacher Resource Centre is still a work in progress. The Minister apologised for the delay in approving the Xavier Jesuit Secondary School but promised to sign the license as soon as the forms arrive on his desk. Fr. Ashley remarked that the Ministry seemed to approve the independent teacher training programs run by the Sovannaphum, Newton-Thilay and East-West school network. However the Minister responded that he hoped that the Xavier Jesuit School project would collaborate with the Ministry to establish joint training programs for university graduates who want to become teachers through the Primary Teacher Training College in Sisophon and through the Teacher Training Institute in Battambang. His Excellency, Mr. Lay Chhiv Iv, emphasized that the style of cooperation with Fr. Ashley at the Royal University of Phnom Penh over many years provides a good model for the kind of cooperation that the Ministry hopes for in the area of teacher training in the future.
